Read This Book

Fantastic. And gross. But fascinating. A story of one man, against the backdrop of medical education of the United States. I learned so much- it’s incredible.

And gross.

NaBloPoMo Day 18: Book List Progress- C’s and D’s

Yes, I have gotten through the C’s and D’s. From Candide to Cyrano de Bergerac, and from the Da Vinci Code to Dust Tracks on a Road.

I think I’m making good progress. I only have nine E’s, so maybe I’ll finish those before the year is out. Who can say? Although, apparently the Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer is really long, so we’ll have to see. Then again, it only took me fourteen days to read Dombey and Son.

NaBloPoMo Day 12: Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens

Dombey and Son

A behemoth novel of Old Chas- 938 pages. It took me almost two weeks to read it. It was a labor of like, that’s for sure. But I will say this may be my favorite Dickens novel. Of course, there are still novels of his that I have not read.

This particular story is about the rich, cold, callous Paul Dombey, the owner of a shipping company. His neglect of his family (especially the women) leads to his personal and professional downfall, thanks to two back to back scandals. It also concerns the unwanted daughter, Florence, and her desire for her father’s love, and how she grows under his complete ignoring of her.

I can’t say exactly what it is about this novel that I like. How the mighty fall, perhaps? What could happen if you’re so cocky that you just walk over people without a sense of kindness or gratitude? Yes, probably. It was an effort, and I’m glad I read it.

NaBloPoMo Day 10: Book/Yarn Diet

I’m thinking about going on another yarn diet next year. My stash is pretty big and I need to start whittling that down. I’ve been stocking up on yarn just to make sure I’m prepped for next year. Catherine asked if maybe that was defeating the whole purpose.

Whose side is she on, anyway?

It also doesn’t help that I’ve found two Etsy yarn shops with amazing yarn and I need it all.

So- same rules apply? It doesn’t count as buying if I get gift cards. Or if I talk Richie into buying it for me. Needles and other knitting notions do not count in the diet.

I still haven’t decided whether or not to go on a book diet next year. I plan on reading my books in the order that I first added them to GoodReads. I’ve been buying some of the books in order because some of the books aren’t available in either the city or county libraries. But, I’ve also been pulling back on the buying, and just waiting to see what happens. I’m just continuing to read my books in alphabetical order and not trying to focus on what I’m going to read next year.

We’ll see how long that lasts

NaBloPoMo Day 6: Book List Progress- B’s

Are all read!

(for those new here, read this post)

I’ve read all of my B books from The Baby Bond to By the Light of the Moon.

I’m still working through C’s and D’s. I have one C book left which will probably have to be ordered off Amazon since I can’t seem to find it anywhere else. I’m almost halfway through Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens right now, and will then have two more D’s to go.

Who’s excited?

No really- is anyone else as excited about this as I am?

Didn’t think so

My Vacation: A Summary

I know lot are dying to know what I did on vacation. Don’t lie- you’re reading this right now. So here you go:

– finished knitting 1 washcloth

– read Kiss the Dead by Laurell K. Hamilton

– had ice cream before noon

– baked two batches of cinnamon rolls (but they came from a can so don’t tell Kate. She gets fussy about that sort of thing.)

– bought fish

– updated Ravelry (a little)

– got my hair cut

– rolled $3 in coin (big ballin’!) (is that what the kids says these days? I’m so out of the loop)

– finished season five of Dr. Who

– tried making mineral veil and failed (a post for another day)

– mailed my New York friend’s knitted stuff (which she hasn’t received yet)

– had lunch with Kelly

– bought over $55 in makeup (it was in the fun money budget, don’t judge)

– ate out at 4 restaurants

– tried 2 seasonal Steak “N Shake shakes

– bought my own Sonic Screwdriver (a pen with a flashlight and a laser pointer that I use to torment the fish)

– manicure and pedicure

– tried the Courtesy Diner for the first time

– finished my fingerless mitts

Do you know that this was the first vacation where I only read one book? And technically I was  already halfway through it when my vacation started.
